MSU ECE Approved Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

The following course selections are designed to meet minimum requirements of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and the University Core Curriculum, and departmental polices. A minimum of three semester hours from Fine Arts is required. A minimum of six semester hours in Humanities is required where at least two courses must be related as defined by a Humanities Sequence. Similarly, a minimum of six semester hours in the Social Sciences is required which should consist of a sequence of at least two related courses as defined by a Social Science Sequence.

The following information lists courses and sequences that meet the above requirements. It should be noted that instead of two two-course sequences of related courses, a three-course sequence of related courses may be taken. The student should consult an academic advisor for assistance in selecting a three-course sequence or for the approval of a two-course sequence other than described below. Students are advised to consult the University Bulletin for course pre-requisites.

Two-Course Sequences

A Humanities Sequence is defined as one of the following:

  1. Any two courses with the same course prefix (e.g., HI 1163 and HI 1173).
  2. Any course from the Philosophy group (PHI course prefix) and any course from the Religion group (REL course prefix).
  3. Two courses from the following list:

    EN 2213 English Literature I HI 1213 Early Western World
    EN 2223 English Literature II HI 1163 World History Before 1500
    EN 2273 World Literature I HI 1173 World History Since 1500
    EN 2283 Sophomore English Honors HI 1223 Modern Western World


A Social Sciences Sequence is defined as one of the following:

  1. Any two courses with the same course prefix (e.g., PS 1313 and PS 1513).
  2. Any course from the Anthropology group (AN course prefix)and any course from the Sociology group (SO course prefix).
  3. Any course from the Economics group (EC course prefix) and any course from the Political Science group (PS course prefix).
  4. Any course from the Geography group (GR course prefix) and any course from the Political Science group (PS course prefix).An example would be GR 1123 and either PS 1313 or PS 1393.
  5. SO 1003 (or SO 1093) and PSY 1013 (or PSY 1093).


Combination Sequences

The sequencing requirements for both the humanities and social sciences can also be satisfied using approved 3-course combinations. the remaining humanity or social science will not have a sequencing requirement. Consult an academic advisor for assistance.
