Instructions – Directed Individual Studies Enrollment


If you are planning to enroll in a Directed Individual Study (DIS), ECE 4000, you must plan ahead of time with your advisor. To speed up the process in creating this class and get the Department’s approval on time, please follow these instructions:

  1. You must submit the “Directed Individual Study Approval Form” and supporting proposal by the following deadlines:

    1. November 15 – Spring semester enrollment
    2. April 15 – Summer term enrollment
    3. July 15 – Fall semester enrollment

  2. For a research project DIS, you must submit a minimum of a two-page proposal with the DIS approval form according to the format below. In addition, a final copy of the research project report must be submitted electronically to the Department in order to meet the DIS completion requirements.

    Proposal Format:

    • Student’s Name, Title of the research project, and the semester you are planning to enroll.
    • General background information about the research topic.
    • Literature Review (discussion of current ongoing research in the topic area)
    • Proposed Method (state in detail how you are approaching the problem, technique to be used, what do you expect to achieve, methods of evaluating your results, etc…)
    • References (minimum of 3)
Note: It is the responsibility of the student to write the proposal for the DIS course and get it approved by the advisor and/or instructor of the course. Proposals that do not meet the specified criteria will be rejected.
  1. For a course oriented DIS. You must submit a course outline with the DIS Approval Form. In addition, an extended summary (approximately 5 pages), outlining your accomplishments must be submitted electronically to the Department in order to meet the DIS completion requirement.
