Electrical Engineering Technical Electives

Students of the Electrical Engineering undergraduate program are required to complete nine hours of EE Technical Electives. Students may choose from any of the 4000-level ECE courses offered with the following exceptions, provided that the courses selected meet the EE Technical Elective Depth and Breadth Policy:

  • ECE 4512 - EE Design I
  • ECE 4522 - EE Design II
  • ECE 4532 - CPE Design I
  • ECE 4542 - CPE Design II

In addition to the ECE courses regularly offered, students wishing to obtain elective credit in areas of study where no formal courses are offered, a Directed Individual Study course may be pursued. These courses require mutual agreement between the student and faculty member with regard to topic, objective(s), scope, deliverables, and method(s) of evaluation . DIS courses require that the student initiate the pursuit of such beginning a minimum of two months in advance of the start of the term in which the coursework is to be completed. No more than one DIS may be applied as a EE Technical Elective.

EE Technical Elective Depth and Breadth Policy

In order to ensure that both depth and breadth are reflected in the selection of EE Technical Electives, students must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Depth Requirement - Two of the three technical electives will be strongly related and provide a richness in comprehension of a specific specialization area in Electrical Engineering. The specialization area is sufficiently flexible to track the dynamic changes in technology and engineering practice as determined and documented through the advising process, but will typically be satisfied with courses from a specific entry in the EE Specialization List.
  • Breadth Requirement - One of the three technical electives will provide an alternative avenue to the Depth Requirement specialization area. The alternative area is determined and documented through the advising process, but will be satisfied with a course from a different entry in the EE Specialization List than selected in the Depth Requirement.

Quite simply, in order for EE Technical Elective selections to be compliant with the Depth and Breadth Policy, the following two conditions must be met:

  • Depth - Two of the electives selected must have at least one X shown in the same column, indicating like coverage in at least one specialization area.
  • Breadth - One of the electives selected must have at least one X shown in a column different than the others, indicating alternate coverage in at least one specialization area.

As always, students must meet all course prerequisites. Contact the major advisor for additional information.
