Project Description:

This project is aimed at creating an electronic device that will deter animals from causing outages on exposed energized power distribution equipment. Specifically, this device will deter squirrels and birds away from high voltage switches and certain substation equipment. Animals will be kept from nesting or staying in the vicinity of the energized equipment. Hundreds of thousands of dollars or more are lost every year from many power utility companies from animal related power outages. Many of these outages are caused by birds and squirrels either by nesting, contaminating, or short-circuiting high-voltage equipment. This device will use high intensity strobe lights, and ultrasonic speakers to deter animals away from equipment. Motion sensors will also be used to trigger the device only when an animal is in the target zone. Data storing will be available for the device to store the time and frequency of its operations. This information can then be retrieved through a RS232 port on the device.
