Each year, numerous children in the United States die of heat related incidents from being enclosed in parked vehicles. During the months of June, July, and August, high temperatures ranging from 63°F - 115°F can cause heat exhaustion and heat strokes, which could lead to deaths. Many of these heat-related fatalities occurred with children either being left in the vehicle or forgotten. In the United States, there have been 31 heat-related deaths in 2005 and 261 between 1998-2004.
This project will implement a child seat safety device, which will act as a safety prevention device. Thermo Child Seat Safety Device consists of a temperature detector, pressure detector, microcontroller, Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), and a cellular module, which places a call to the parent/guardian notifying that their child is located in the vehicle and the temperature has reached an extreme level. Thermo Child Seat Safety Device will be a small and affordable device that can be added to an existing child seat to protect a child from heat-related issues.
The device will be operated based on detection of pressure in the child seat. Initially, the microcontroller is in sleep mode and cellular module is off. Temperature will be periodically checked by the microcontroller once pressure is detected in the car seat. If the temperature exceeds the 85°F limit, the microcontroller will interface with the cellular module to place a call to the emergency call, to the number stored on the SIM card.
