Objective

Design and implement an interface between a data communication product and personal data assistant through the built-in IR port on the personal data assistant. The interface will allow the monitoring, configuring, and troubleshooting of the data communication product on the personal data assistant (PDA).

Scope

The project will be divided into three parts:

  • PDA Software - Terminal emulation, file upload/dowload, Ethernet configuration
  • Serial/IR adapter hardware
  • Prototype hardware and software to emulate the operation of the communications product

Roles & Responsibilities (available on team webpage)

Key Activities

  • Decide upon IR hardware and machine to use for prototype communications product.
  • Determine user interface for PDA software
  • Establishing PDA to prototype communications over infrared connection
  • Develop the prototype software
  • Develop the PDA software

Key Deliverables

  • PDA Software
  • IR/Serial adapter
  • Prototype hardware and software
  • Documentation on above

Timeline/Schedule

Milestones

  • 8/23 - Initial Project Presentation

  • Prototype system selected and software development begun
  • PDAs obtained and PDA software development begun
  • IR/Serial adapter assembled
  • Communications through IR/Serial adapter acheived
  • Prototype system software completed
  • PDA software completed.
  • Design completely implemented
  • Final design review

Critical Success Factors

  • Effective communication between members
  • Completion of goals on schedule
  • Capable prototype system determined
  • Successful hardware adapter design
  • Successful PDA and prototype system programming

Metrics

  • Suitable development environment for prototype system
  • Working communications between PDA and prototype
  • Functionally complete PDA software
  • Functionally complete prototype system software
  • Communications between PDA and prototype interpreted and handled correctly

Risks

  • Security - IrDA sniffing
  • Maintaining communications
  • Suitability of prototype system

Boundaries

  • Limiting PDA software to Palm OS platform
  • Using built-in IR of Palms
  • Emulating the data communications device
  • Limit to one semester
  • Limit on monetary resources
