Locking the Simrall Hall Doors

*** If you have an emergency and are not able to lock or unlock the doors when you are supposed to, it is your responsibility to contact someone to get it done. ***

Bill Chapman, Odie McHann, Michael Lane, Dr. Younan, and Dr. Harden (in that order), are your contacts for an emergency need.

The powerdriver and keys will be kept in the shop. The keys are in the keybox in room 309. Three keys are necessary for unlocking/locking Simrall, one that works on the outside doors to the lobby, one that works the doors to the hallways and stairwell, and one that works the Classroom doors. (A key to my office will also be in the shop key box while I am out of town.)

General rule: When you lock a door, push on it to see if it really locked. Sometimes, a small pebble can get wedged at the bottom of the door and keep it from shutting completely, and from locking.

Check the hardware and make sure there are no loose screws, etc.

Remember that, sometimes, faculty come in the north door and don't lock it back. So always be sure that the doors are secure when you have locked them.

The locking/unlocking should be handled in the following pattern.

1. The north door (next to Bowen Hall). When locking, be sure someone hasn't used the key to leave the left (facing out) door unlocked. If so, turn the key clockwise in the lock to be sure the lock is locked.

2. Classrooms 102, 104, and 106. Lock these rooms at 5:00 pm and unlock at 7:30 am.

3. The east door (or back door next to coke machines). You only have to lock this door. Someone else unlocks it. But push it when you have finished. Sometimes, people leave the pushbolts to the stationary door in an unlocked position, which allows the door to be pushed open, even though the deadbolt is locked. If the stationary door is not secured, secure it by pulling the levers on the edge of the door that push the pushbolts into their locked positions (one at the floor, and one at the top of the door).

4. The center doors to the main lobby. Make sure they are closed and locked at night so people who have functions in the auditorium don't have access to the rest of the building. Make sure the outer two doors are propped open in the day time. These doors should stay locked all the time, but propped open in the day time. Always try them after you close them, in case someone has unlocked them with the key or the bar.

5. The north door near the auditorium entrance at the northwest end of the building. This is the designated smoking area for the building, so we will unlock it during the day so the smokers can get back inside the building.

6. The outside doors at the front of Simrall Hall at the main lobby.

7. The west door at the southwest end of the building (next to the library).

8. Check to see that the security room is locked (room 133). It should be locked at all times.

9. Classroom 132. Lock at 5:00 pm and unlock at 7:30 am.

10. The hallway door separating the E-W hall from the N-S hall. Close it, but do not lock it at night, and open it and prop it open with a doorstop in the morning. If it is after 5:00 p.m. and this door is still propped, an alarm will sound above the door. Close the door and the alarm will stop.

11.. The south door at the southeast end of the building.

12. Two classrooms on the second floor, 213 and 250, should be unlocked at 7:30 am and locked at 5:00 pm.

If you are not able to get a door locked, call the physical plant at 325-2052 and tell them. If you can't get the physical plant, call the police at 325-2121 and tell them.

Additional notes. We normally use the 7/16" hex driver in the powerdriver to screw/unscrew the locking mechanisms of the panic bars on one end (the one nearest the center of the double doors), but there are also allen screws on the other ends of the panic bars, as well.

Sometimes, people from Facilities, Custodial Services, or the Physical Plant may lock the doors after some special event in our building. If the panic bar does not open when you unscrew the normal end, check the screw at the other end. Call the Physical Plant only after you have unscrewed both ends and are still not able to get the door to stay locked.

Note: The Unlock Task also requires that you visit classrooms 203, 213, 250, and 149 and the 2nd and 4th floor conference rooms and ensure that the white boards are cleaned, and that the wet-wipes and cleaning solution are replenished.
