From jwbruce at ece.msstate.edu Thu Jan 15 10:15:31 2009 From: jwbruce at ece.msstate.edu (J. W. Bruce) Date: Thu Jan 15 10:17:55 2009 Subject: [ece1002] MATLAB Message-ID: <23839583.484571232036131390.JavaMail.root@zimbra.ece.msstate.edu> ECE1002 requires Matlab. You can purchase the "student version" of Matlab for your use on your laptop anytime/anyplace. This is the version of Matlab for which ECE classes (this one and later) will use for assignments. ITS does have a CD of Matlab available for install on you laptop. Their version runs off of a network license server and has a limited number of seats available. It may not work at your home (due to external network security); ITS may discontinue their license at anytime; and/or, the maximum number of seats may be exceeded when you want to use Matlab. (We do not know the number of seats ITS purchased. It may be that ITS does not have enough seats to allow everyone in ECE1002 to use Matlab simultaneously which will happen in the lecture/lab from time to time.) Here is the policy for Matlab for ECE1002: ============================================ * You may attempt to use the ITS version of Matlab in ECE1002. Other ECE classes or professors may not be so gracious. Caveat emptor. * ITS is responsible for all questions concerning their version of Matlab. (ITS does not have a great track record of support, especially for scientific software.) Caveat emptor. * We will _NOT_ accept any excuses like "The ITS license was not available last night when I tried to do my homework" etc. You are expected to have 24/7 access to Matlab as provided by the student version. Caveat emptor. * The ITS version of Matlab is the "professional" version, but that does _NOT_ mean it has more features than the student version. In fact, it may very well have less functionality. Any function available in the student version is to be available to you in Matlab. Amateur radio exams are offered periodically in a variety of locations. I would like to inform you of several nearby examination sessions: Jan. 31 @ 8AM The Jackson (MS) Amateur Radio Club is offering exams in conjunction with their 2009 Capital City Hamfest. This "show" and "flea market" is one of the better amateur radio shows in the southeast. Visit www.msham.org for more info. Feb. 3, March 3, April 7 @ 6:30PM Jackson County Amateur Radio Association offers monthly exams at the Gautier Public Library on Hwy 90. Call William E. Musa (K5YG@AOL.COM) at 228-872-1278 to reserve your exam spot. Feb. 7, March 7, April 4 @ 9AM West-Central AL Amateur Radio Club offers exams monthly at the American Red Cross, 101 Viking Dr. in Jasper, AL. Feb. 26 (tentative) W5YD (MSU's amateur radio club) will host a session in Simrall Room 129. Time TBD, most likely late afternoon or early evening. March 7 @ 10AM Alcorn County Amateur Radio Service will offer an exam at the Corinth/Alcorn County Airport on CR613 just W of Corinth. (I earned my third and final license, the "Amateur Extra" at a Corinth exam session.) Amateur radio exam fees are usually $14. This is the "minimum" fee set by law. Examiners are allowed to charge more, but almost all charge the minimum $14. If someone charges more, let me know. The exams, especially the first ones, are quite straightforward for technical types like us if you spend just a little time studying. For more info on licensing and some study guides, visit W5YD's website at http://w5yd.org.msstate.edu/new_site/license.php I hope to hear you on the radio someday, JW Bruce (My amateur radio call sign is AE5GO) ------------------ J.W. In the meantime, you should be able to use PCs in the labs in Simrall and around campus to play with Matlab. In short, hang onto your receipts. jwb ------------------ J.W. Our entire shipment was affected by this problem. I have contacted Matlab and they have authorized those to be sent back, so any remaining students with a receipt from Barnes &Noble can get a refund on those. Or they can also hang onto their defective copy and trade it in when we get more. I have reordered the software and Matlab has assured me they are talking to their warehouse to make sure any shipped out will have serial no.'s (there's always hope, anyway). I have also requested that they provide free 2nd Day Air shipping since their error is delaying your class. They agreed in principle but have to clear it through a sales manager first, so we also hope that will happen. If all goes well, we will have more of these in on Monday (two day shipping counting from Thursday, and not counting the weekend. I recreated it the best I could from memory. I also included some "bonus" MATLAB commands and comments in the file. No extra charge. This command history file is available in the "Matlab" folder on the ECE1002 MyCourses site. Don't forget about the quiz. You must complete the quiz before Monday (Jan.26th) at 1PM ciao, jwb PS: Today's lecture notes will be on MyCourses soon. Also, there will be more detailed explanation of today's subject matter available in a few days. ------------------ J.W. I've also include a "bonus" script for those of you who are adventurous. The best way to learn how to use MATLAB is to just play with it. Furthermore, I'd suggest trying the MATLAB demos if you haven't seen them yet. Type "demo" at the MATLAB prompt. jwb ------------------ J.W. You will need to change the matrix definition just before the "diag(X)" statement to define a square matrix like this X= [[1 3 6];[2 5 4];[7 -5 2]]; Interestingly, the 2007 version of MATLAB I use will work just fine with a non-square matrix. Technically, this behavior is probably incorrect. The trace of a matrix is only defined for square matrices according to a source I consulted. It just goes to show you that tools you use cannot always be trusted. You need to verify everything that is life- or system-critical. jwb ------------------ J.W.
