The EcoCAR project has now drawn to a close, and MSU has been selected to participate in EcoCAR 2, which will begin this fall. The project goals will be roughly the same: convert a GM-donated vehicle into a hybrid to improve its fuel economy and emissions, without sacrificing performance or amenities. Our goal: to keep winning championships for MSU! Our kick-off recruiting meeting will be Tuesday, August 23rd at 12:30 pm at CAVS. We will provide pizza and drinks for the students. It will coincide with MSU's Movin' Maroon automotive showcase, which will also be at CAVS. I am writing you because you are scheduled to teach a class from 11:00 to 12:15 on T-TH this Fall. It would go a long way in our recruiting effort if, when you release class on that day, you remind your students about the event and encourage them to attend. We are looking for students of ALL majors, not just engineering. You are welcome to attend yourself if you are interested in finding out more about the project. Thanks very much. Message-ID: Hello ece1002, I will start selling clickers and tool kits tomorrow (Tuesday 8/30/11) in the lounge from 2:00 to 4:00. You will need a tool kit in order to complete your labs this semester and you will also need a clicker to participate in the upcoming classes. You have two options regarding your clicker purchase. The first option is to pay 30 dollars and rent a clicker. When you return it at the end of the semester you will receive a 20 dollar refund sometime in the following months. Your other option is to go to http://www.iclicker.com/products/webclicker/ and subscribe to the 180-day subscription for 10 dollars. This will allow you to use your smartphone or laptop as a clicker. Either way you will pay 10 dollars. I recommend that you strongly consider trying the online clicker. By purchasing the online clicker you will not have to wait for a deposit at the end of the semester and you will pay less money up front. Starting tomorrow you can pay the following amounts for you tool kits: 1) Tool kit = $40 (you will be responsible for paying 10 dollars for your online clicker) 2) Tool kit + clicker rental = $70 (you will receive a $20 deposit back at the end of the semester) Please let me know if you have any questions, Matthew -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Green" Subject: History/Engineering Lecture Series September 01, 5:00 - 6:00 PM On Thursday, 01 September, the Bagley College of Engineering in conjunction with the MSU Department of History, will host the 2011 Annual History/Engineering Lecture. There will be lecture from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM in McCain 120. The lecturer this year will be Dr. James T. Andrews from Iowa State University. The title of his lecture is Red Cosmos: Space Exploration, Mythology, and Soviet Popular Culture, 1917-1964. All faculty, staff, students, and friends are invited to this lecture. In this lecture Andrews traces the history of Russian/Soviet space flight, from early dreams of sending zeppelins into space through Yuri Gagarin?s first orbital space flight. He is particularly interested in the role of space exploration within the Soviet regime and how that fed into Russian nationalism. Among the scientists and inventors that Andrews considers is Konstantin Tsiolkovskii. His liquid fuel rockets, designed well before Robert Goddard?s efforts in the United States, led the Soviet Union to proclaim Tsiolkovskii ? the Father of Soviet rocketry and Hero of the Soviet people.? Andrews also skillfully compares Russian/Soviet space exploration efforts with those of the United States. James T. Andrews is professor of history at Iowa State University where he is also Director of the University Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities). He is the author of Red Cosmos: K. E. Tsiolkovskii, Grandfather of Soviet Rocketry (College Station, 2009) and Science for the Masses: The Bolshevik State, Public Science, and the Popular Imagination in Soviet Russia, 1917-34 (College Station, 2003). He is also the editor of Maksim Gor?kii, Science and Revolution (USC, 1995), and co-editor of Into the Cosmos: Space Exploration and Soviet Culture (Pittsburgh, 2011). Dr. Andrews holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His various research awards include Fulbright-Hays, Social Science Research Council, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is the recipient of numerous distinguished teaching awards and a finalist for the American Historical Association?s Eugene Asher Award for national distinction in teaching. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
