Please post, forward, or tell your students about the 2011 Nebraska Summer Research Program housed on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The program offers students an excellent opportunity to hone research skills and to experience life as a graduate student. Students will enhance their academic resume, work closely with faculty and peers, and have fun with social and professional development activities, all while receiving numerous benefits . Students historically underrepresented in graduate education are especially encouraged to apply. Due to funding restrictions, participation is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. All programs for 2011 are listed at http://go.unl.edu/205 and included projects in Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Redox Biology and Biochemistry, and Virology. We're featuring the project(s) listed below. ? The Nebraska Materials Research Science and Engineering Center REU focuses on new magnetic structures and materials at the nanometer scale. Research projects involve nanodevices for space exploration and drug delivery, DNA chips, carbon nanotubes for hydrogen storage and nanomagnetic structures for faster computers and energy conversion. Learn more at http://go.unl.edu/us4 . ? Nebraska's Optics and Laser Physics REU focuses on experimental and theoretical techniques of modern laser physics. Microscopy, surgery, atomic clocks, and cell manipulation all rely on the use and advancement of optics and lasers. Student project descriptions are available at http://go.unl.edu/nf4 . Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority review of applications begins Tuesday, February 15 and all applications are due Tuesday, March 1 . Thank you for your assistance in disseminating this information. I will also be selling them during class tomorrow. If you have not purchased a lab kit ($70) you MUST do so as soon as possible. If you do not purchase one you will not be able to pass the course. The clickers are how we take attendance, therefore you will be counted absent for the rest of the year. Also, the lab kits that we will do at the end of the year count as a large part of your final grade. Between being counted absent for the rest of the semester and not being able to complete any of your labs, you will be dangerously close to failing the course before any of your other work is even considered. Thursday at 4:00 I will give Dr. Bruce all of the money that I have collected and I will no longer be able to sell any lab kits. On a positive note: You all did a great job with homework 1. Almost all of you named and submitted your PDF correctly. Thank you so much for following instructions and doing a good job. If you have any questions please email me or stop by the student lounge during my office hours. Matthew -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The easiest way to find an appropriate magazine article is to use IEEE explore. If you are on campus you can access IEEE explore without having to sign in. Use the link: http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/dynhome.jsp to access the home page of IEEE explore. Browse journals and magazines and select magazines in the search options. You can browse specific magazines and articles. You can also do a search on a topic that interests you. Make sure your article was written in the past 12 months and that it is suitable for a 3 minute presentation. If you are not on campus you can log into IEEE explore through the msu library webpage. Please let me know if you have any questions. Matthew -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The list of required tools has been posted to Blackboard (under "soldering"). You will need this stuff by Wednesday. The rest of you need to get your $70 to Matthew today (at the end of class) so we can distribute the tools to everyone. I want to get our hands dirty on Wednesday. Everyone will probably want to invest in a small plastic toolbox/tacklebox to hold your tools and parts. (I bought one as an undergrad in the late 1980s and it holds my electronics tools to this day. ) See you at 1PM today. jwb ------------------ J.W.
