I am very excited about teaching this course since I consider this course one of the cornerstones in your undergraduate education. The course web site is located here: http://www.ece.msstate.edu/research/isip/publications/courses/ece_3163/ The syllabus is ready for your review. Please read it carefully so we don't have to spend time on this in our first class. I'll be happy to answer any questions via email. Some of the details of the lecture schedule will change as we get into the course. This is the first time I am teaching from this textbook, so I am sure the amount of time we spend on each section will need to be adjusted as I get a better feel for this material. Also, please try to read Sections 1.1 and 1.2 for Monday's class. Reading ahead will be an important way to prepare yourself for each lecture. I'll post the lecture notes the night before each lecture so that you have time to review them before the class. To further my preparations for the course, I'd like you to tell me a little more about yourselves. I have reviewed your academic records online, but that doesn't tell me the entire story. I am specifically interested in knowing what aspects of your undergraduate education have you enjoyed, what fields you are considering to pursue upon graduation, and whether you consider yourself strong in theory, practice or both. As you have probably heard, this course requires a good grasp of Calculus and other related concepts in engineering mathematics. Next, I'd like to know something about your future employment plans. What type of job do you plan to pursue? research? development? design? support? etc. What types of courses are you planning on taking to prepare you for such a job? Finally, I'd like to know more about your relevant background in software. Are you familiar with MATLAB (the answer should be yes)? What other computer languages do you know? What significant experiences have you had involving computer modeling and simulation? I hope we can push the envelope a bit this semester in this course. This field is moving very quickly. There have been a lot of good developments in the past 5 to 10 years. A background in this material is essential if you want to get a decent job in a related area since most employers now expect engineers to be capable to modeling and simulating the systems that they develop. I think if we all work hard this semester we can accomplish a great deal. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Please email him your preferences for a two-hour block of time when he can hold the recitation section. I would recommend Tues. night from 7 to 9 PM as a starting point. -Joe From rr370 at msstate.edu Thu Aug 21 10:01:19 2008 From: rr370 at msstate.edu (rr370@msstate.edu) Date: Thu Aug 21 10:01:35 2008 Subject: [ece3163] Recitation lecture Message-ID: Dear students, Only few people replied to me regarding the recitation lecture timings, we got 2 hours per week therefore e-mail me your timing preferences so that I can arrange the lecture hall as soon as possible. It may be that all timings are not suited for everybody I will try to fit the best possible timings according to the majority of the preferences and the others can meet me in my office hours during the semester. regards, RAM From picone at ece.msstate.edu Thu Aug 21 20:42:18 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Thu Aug 21 20:43:14 2008 Subject: [ece3163] Homework No. 1 Message-ID: <48AE197A.3040202@ece.msstate.edu> I have added homework no. 1 to the syllabus and the solutions to the homework directory on the course web site. When you go to access the solutions, you will be prompted for a password. Use the following: User Name: ece3163 Password: ece3163 These solution are not as detailed as I would like. Your recitation instructor, Ram, will fill in the details in the recitation class, and also show the relevant MATLAB code. I expect some portion of the recitation section will be spent actually working with MATLAB interactively and answering questions. Most importantly, since I am not collecting homework, there will be a tendency not to work the problems. Please avoid that temptation. Rather than have you struggle individually with homework problems, I want you working as groups to solve these problems and understand them. The recitation section will be an important opportunity to do this. Each student needs to understand every homework problem. Working as a group you can quickly learn from each other. In the past, students have formed study groups. I have enjoyed dropping in on those groups and helping them from time to time. I'd rather you spend time learning the material than stressing about whether you can complete a homework assignment on time by yourself. Hopefully, this will make learning this material a more enjoyable and rewarding experience. -Joe From picone at ece.msstate.edu Fri Aug 22 19:55:44 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Fri Aug 22 19:56:44 2008 Subject: [ece3163] Tuesday's recitation class Message-ID: <48AF6010.2020301@ece.msstate.edu> In addition to working through the homework problems, I would like the recitation class to review the examples I discussed in class today and to explain them in detail.
