The exam will cover everything through Friday's lecture, though the emphasis will be on material you have had time to digest. We will probably have one problem each from Chaps. 4, 5, and 6. -Joe From picone at ece.msstate.edu Tue Oct 14 20:41:22 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Tue Oct 14 20:43:04 2008 Subject: [ece3163] Chapter 6 Message-ID: <48F54A42.9040605@ece.msstate.edu> I am working on the notes for the remainder of Chap. 6 tonight. I think we will spend tomorrow's lecture on Section 6.4, and Friday's lecture on 6.6 (we will skip 6.5). I want to go slowly over the circuit analysis material since this will be new to some of you and it is an important application for electrical engineers. Next Monday we will start Chap. 7 which is focused on z-Transforms. -Joe From picone at ece.msstate.edu Wed Oct 15 09:07:43 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Wed Oct 15 09:09:44 2008 Subject: [ece3163] hw no. 6 Message-ID: <48F5F92F.70109@ece.msstate.edu> has been posted. -Joe From picone at ece.msstate.edu Sun Oct 19 19:41:05 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Mon Oct 20 07:18:22 2008 Subject: [ece3163] Ch 6 homework In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <48FBD3A1.80403@ece.msstate.edu> The portion of the ECE web site that hosts our class notes is down for some reason. It probably won't be up until Monday morning. Attached is the homework for Chap. 6. Let me know if you need anything else and I'll email it to the class. -Joe -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Could you tell me if this is something I > should be concerned with for the exam? Yes, it would be legitimate to ask you to plot, or sketch, the amplitude and phase. If you want to bring a calculator to the exam you can. However, I'll try to avoid problems that involve extensive numerical calculations or MATLAB code. Those types of problems don't work well in a 50-minute exam. -Joe From picone at ece.msstate.edu Sun Oct 26 15:12:11 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Sun Oct 26 14:13:11 2008 Subject: [ece3163] exam no. 1 results Message-ID: <4904CF1B.5060600@ece.msstate.edu> Below are the results for exam no. 2 (second column). I have also retained the statistics for the first exam so you can compare your performance across both exams. If you send me an email, I will send you your individual grade. A few interesting points: (1) On prob. 1(g), some people worked this using a delta function. I would like to see the full work for that solution, and if you can convince me it is correct, I'll raise your grade to 10 for this part. I need these solution within a few days. (2) I believe the solution for prob. 3(b) was incorrect. A number of people worked this problem correctly and produced a solution different than the solution manual. That was impressive. For those who produced the solution in the manual, I offer you the chance to convince me your solution is correct, again for extra credit. Please submit your solutions within a few days. (3) A number of you are still struggling with the difference between copying the solution in the manual and actually working the problems. Remember that the final exam will not be like the homework, so eventually this will catch up with you. The overall performance on this exam was about where we predicted. If you scored below 50 on this exam, we should probably talk about the amount of time you are putting into this course and discuss ways to make your study time more efficient and productive. Let me know if you have further questions. -Joe ===================== Avg 57 55 Median 57 53 Stdev 19 19 Min 20 16 Max 98 93 Histogram: < 10 0 0 10-19 0 1 20-29 1 0 30-39 2 3 40-49 5 5 50-59 3 4 60-69 7 4 70-79 1 2 80-89 2 1 > 90 1 1 From picone at ece.msstate.edu Mon Oct 27 08:28:58 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Mon Oct 27 07:30:01 2008 Subject: [ece3163] final exam Message-ID: <4905C21A.1090907@ece.msstate.edu> It is never too early to start thinking about the final exam. The format for the final will be different from the hourly in-class exams in two important ways: (1) The problems will not simply be replicas of the homework. Instead they will require you to integrate concepts learned in the class. (2) MATLAB: You will be expected to solve problems using MATLAB. This means you will need to bring your laptop to the exam. You will be asked to write, debug, run, and then document your MATLAB solutions. I am working on details for the latter. The final will be open books and notes. Let me know if you have questions. -Joe From picone at ece.msstate.edu Wed Oct 29 16:46:41 2008 From: picone at ece.msstate.edu (Joseph Picone) Date: Wed Oct 29 15:47:57 2008 Subject: [ece3163] [Fwd: Re: [ECE #31249] printer in classroom] Message-ID: <4908D9C1.2070106@ece.msstate.edu> As I mentioned previously, for the final exam, you will be expected to use MATLAB during the exam to solve problems. This means you will be expected to write and execute MATLAB code from your laptops. To make it easy for you to turn in your results, you will need to be able to print to a printer called Blue, which will be located in the classroom. The instructions for enabling your laptop to print to Blue can be found here: http://www.ece.msstate.edu/wiki/index.php/Helpdesk#How_do_I_print_to_an_ECE_printer_from_my_personal_computer.3F Please take care of this well in advance of the final exam so that we have time to troubleshoot your problems. If you have any problems, consult with our TA, Ram, and he can help you work through these problems. Being able to print to the department printers from your laptop will be a useful capability for your future classes, so hopefully you will find this to be worth the investment in time. This is the first and only request regarding this matter that you will receive, so please add this to your To Do list. Happy printing, -Joe
