Hello everyone,

We welcome every one of you in ECE 3714 Digital Device lab. In this lab, 
we will learn how to design digital circuits using software and hardware.

We will use email as primary method to communicate. Please check the 
email regularly. This lab needs laptop computers because all experiments 
are performed in the classroom (room 100).

We will have a lab orientation on 1/28, next Wednesday (3-5 PM). Lab 
orientation include announcement for the lab policy and introduction to 
the basic usage of the equipments that we will use throughout the 
semester. The attendance is required.

**Preparation for lab orientation**
We have three required softwares for the semesters. Please install three 
programs before the next lab.
1. ISE design software - digital system design tool
2. ADEPT software - data(program) transfer program
3. Word processing software - lab report writing and transform PDF form
   If you don't have MS Word, install a free word processing software, 
Openoffice from http://www.openoffice.org/ .

**Installation procedure for ISE and ADEPT software**
1) please go to two links below and download the programs. The programs 
are only for Windows and Linux system. There is no Mac version (See the 
bottom). You may need to create online ID in order to download.

For the students from previous semester*, we are planning to use Xilinx 
13.2 version instead of old version 9.2. Please remove the old version, 
and install the new version. Thank you.

<ADAPT 2.8 version> - download 'Adept 2.8.1 *System*'

Make sure if you have enough disk space (about 20 GB) to install the 
program. It may takes 2~3 hours to download the program depending on the 
internet connection. So please download the program as soon as possible.

2) unzip on the desktop if needed.
3) install two programs, Xilinx ISE 9.2 and ADEPT software. There will 
be some messages asking about the subprogram during installation. Let it 
proceed at all stage.

Installation process will take about an hour. It would be better to 
install the program today. Please let us know if you have any question.

Both of choices requires Windows XP genuine version. ECE or CSE students

site. Download 'Windows xp service pack 3.' from the site. After 
installing Windows OS, follow the same instructions above.

Hello,

We would like to remind some of the students who may forget about the 
lab report due. The due for the lab report is following Tuesday 11:59 
PM. Last Wednesday, we had lab 0 session, so the lab 0 report due is 
today. Please make sure you turn the report before the due. It would 
better to submit during 1-2 hours prior to the due because simultaneous 
submission by many students may cause a failure on the system. Any 
excuses after the due would not be accepted. I hope this would be 
helpful for you. If there is any student who couldn't install the 
program, visit room 308 during the office hour on Tuesday 3:20 PM - 5:20 PM.

Also, the due for the prelab (online) quiz is the same time, Tuesday 
11:59 PM. It is available on the 'assessment' page in myCourses. Please 
don't forget to save all the answers after answering the questions.

Basic information about the lab is available on the 'lab page' in 
myCourse too. Please take a look at the contents there if you haven't 
see them yet.

On Wednesday after the clsss (9 AM), we will sell the lab equipments 
including digital chips, BASYS, and breadboard/wire kit.

The cost is
BASYS: $55
Breadboard: $20
Wires: $15 (Breadboard/wire bundle $30)
Chips: $8
Chip extractor: $2

If you are not available after the class, you can go to the student 
lounge(2nd floor in Simral) and buy the parts from the IEEE students. We 
will also sell them before the lab. If you have any other questions, 
please let me know.

Hello,

I attached the digital chip list that we are going to use in this 
semester. This is also printed and put in the bag with the chips so you 
don't have to print this out. The students who already have the chips 
obtained from last semester don't need all chips listed in the document. 
If you have some chips listed in the document, you can purchase the 
chips individually.

And last week, all students were divided into several teams where two 
students made one team. The numbers are put besides the students name in 
'attendance' sheet attached here. Please check your team number and your 
partner's name. If you don't have a team, please let TAs know during the 
lab hour.

In the lab today, we are going to use breadboard and BASYS board. If 
there is anybody who haven't bought the parts yet, please come to room 
308 before the lab today, if possible. That would help all of the 
students to spend more time on the lab itself. Each team needs at least 
one BASYS board, and each member needs breadboard, wire kit, and chips.

I saw some students who have a problem downloading the same and old lab 
report. If you have the problem, you can solve it following the steps on 
the link below.

The problem here is actually the cache. The web browser stores web data 
in temporary folder, which is normally invisible to the users, for fast 
connection if the user revisit the site. Therefore, you can experience 
the faster web browsing by downloading only new content from the web. 
This ability is good most of the time, but not good for our case. 
Therefore, if anyone experience having problem downloading a new lab 
manual or report, please clear the cache before the access to the lab 
webpage.

You can use an addon to the browser to automatically clean up those caches.
