From bjones at ece.msstate.edu Wed Jan 7 14:40:25 2009 From: bjones at ece.msstate.edu (Bryan A. Jones) Date: Wed Jan 7 14:52:44 2009 Subject: [ece3724] Textbook information Message-ID: <49651339.10703@ece.msstate.edu> All, I thought I'd clear up some textbook confusion: only one textbook, "Microcontrollers: From Assembly Language to C Using the PIC24 Family" by R. Reese, J. W. Bruce, and B. A. Jones is required for the course; the campus bookstore thought both the old text and this text were required. This should be updated soon. In addition, if you paid $120 for the book, you paid too much for one textbook! The price on campus is $70 (see below). The course website, http://www.ece.msstate.edu/wiki/index.php/ECE3724_Microprocessors, has more information and links to the book. -- Bryan A. Weasel, Jr To: 'Bryan A. Jones' , 'J. W. Bruce' , 'Raymond S. Winton' CC: Just a reminder to please announce in your classes and forward this email to your students that breadboards will be sold this week at the beginning of lab sections. This week will be the only week IEEE representatives will be coming to sell breadboard kits at the lab sections. Breadboards and the wire kit will cost $30. Should a student be unable to purchase the breadboard kit this week, they can contact an IEEE representative and try to purchase one that way by emailing ieee@ece.msstate.edu , or contact Dr. Younan. Amateur radio exams are offered periodically in a variety of locations. I would like to inform you of several nearby examination sessions: Jan. 31 @ 8AM The Jackson (MS) Amateur Radio Club is offering exams in conjunction with their 2009 Capital City Hamfest. This "show" and "flea market" is one of the better amateur radio shows in the southeast. Visit www.msham.org for more info. Feb. 3, March 3, April 7 @ 6:30PM Jackson County Amateur Radio Association offers monthly exams at the Gautier Public Library on Hwy 90. Call William E. Musa (K5YG@AOL.COM) at 228-872-1278 to reserve your exam spot. Feb. 7, March 7, April 4 @ 9AM West-Central AL Amateur Radio Club offers exams monthly at the American Red Cross, 101 Viking Dr. in Jasper, AL. Feb. 26 (tentative) W5YD (MSU's amateur radio club) will host a session in Simrall Room 129. Time TBD, most likely late afternoon or early evening. March 7 @ 10AM Alcorn County Amateur Radio Service will offer an exam at the Corinth/Alcorn County Airport on CR613 just W of Corinth. (I earned my third and final license, the "Amateur Extra" at a Corinth exam session.) Amateur radio exam fees are usually $14. This is the "minimum" fee set by law. Examiners are allowed to charge more, but almost all charge the minimum $14. If someone charges more, let me know. The exams, especially the first ones, are quite straightforward for technical types like us if you spend just a little time studying. For more info on licensing and some study guides, visit W5YD's website at http://w5yd.org.msstate.edu/new_site/license.php I hope to hear you on the radio someday, JW Bruce (My amateur radio call sign is AE5GO) ------------------ J.W.
