There will be an extra credit assignment for all who attend. See you in class shortly. Engineering Week Seminar Professor Richard Hirsh, Virginia Tech, will present an Engineering Week seminar entitled Energy Crises and Energy Solutions: Why technology is NOT the total solution. On February 20 at 4 PM in McCain 120. In this presentation, Dr. Hirsh will argue that nontechnical factors influence the widespread acceptance and use of new technologies. To make his point, he will draw on examples from the history of energy from the days of the 1970s energy crises to the present. In particular, he will look at technologies involved in nuclear power, renewable energy, and electric vehicles. Drawing on his academic and policy experience, Dr. Hirsh will emphasize the notion that social factors remain important elements?perhaps the most important elements?in de determining the successful implementation of energy (and many other) technologies. Hirsh is a member of the faculty of the Science and Technology Studies Program and Professor, Department of History, Virginia Tech.
