The Electric Ship Research and Development Consortium (ESRDC) is a multi-university effort sponsored by the Office of Naval Research to develop advanced science, technology and applications for the next generation all-electric ship. The project is a five year program starting in 2002 and continuing through 2007. Participating universities are:
- Florida State University
- Purdue University
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Mississippi State University
- United States Naval Academy
- University of South Carolina
- University of Texas at Austin
MSU researchers are working with colleagues from these universities and the shipbuilding community on issues related to the electric power system within the naval ships. Faculty, students and research staff are working in the areas of power systems, power electronics, power controls, simulation and modeling, and high voltage engineering.
MSU is a significant contributor to the ESRDC with our long-stranding, well-recognized power and high voltage engineering programs. Additionally the State of Mississippi is fortunate to have one of the major shipbuilding facilities in the country in Pascagoula, Mississippi. MSU researchers are partnering with Northrop Grumman to facilitate real-world exposure of shipbuilding challenges and integrate MSU's research activities into technical development for future ship systems.
