References
References use the style IES Reference. References differ depending on
the standards of the conference or organization for which you are writing,
but no matter what format the references are supposed to follow, one
very important aspect is cross-referencing.
Every time an equation, figure, or footnote is mentioned in the body of your
paper, you should cross-reference it to the object to which it refers.
To cross-reference properly, this is what you should do:
1) Make sure that the object to which you are cross-referencing
exists. In the
document, type the introductory text that begins the cross-reference, whether
it is a phrase referring to an object or equation or merely a number denoting
a footnote.
2) Go to Insert >> Reference >> Cross-reference.
This box will pop up:
3) Change the Reference type to the type of the item you want to
refer to. In the Insert reference to box. Click the information
you
want to insert into the document.
4) The items in the For which box will differ depending on the
captions and objects you have created in your document, but click on the
specific item you want to refer to.
5) Make sure the Insert as hyperlink box is checked. This will allow
the user to jump to the reference item by holding down Ctrl and
clicking on the reference.
6) Click Insert.
The following is just an example of a reference block. It only represents one
style. Refer to an appropriate document or template for the correct reference
style.
In this example, each entry is set off by a number in square brackets, and
every line is left justified. In MS Word, the way this is done is with the
Bullets and Numbering tool. In the menu bar, go to
Format >> Bullets and Numbering
In the dialog box that pops up, select any of the blocks under the
"Numbered" tab and click "Customize..." The next dialog box
should look like this:
Change the fields as necessary to match the specific style you are using.
When you click OK, the first number will be inserted into the text.
When you're finished with your reference list, you may have to adjust the
margins slightly to fit the format of the document.
