From Ece

Jump to: navigation, search

Steps to create a default profile to use with an image:

  • Create a new user
  • Log in as new user and set options and preferences
  • Log out as new user
  • Log in as an administrator
  • Copy new user profile to DEFAULT user profile (see below)
  • Load registry for DEFAULT user and any references to the new user (see below)

Copy a user profile to the DEFAULT profile:

  • Press <Windows Key> + <Break> to open the System window.
You can also get to it from Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System.
  • Open the Advanced System Settings from the Tasks list
  • Click Continue on the permission prompt.
  • Click the Settings button under User Profiles.
  • Highlight the profile you want to copy to the Default profile then click the Copy To... button.
  • In the Copy To window, click Browse to select the C:\Users\Default folder
  • Click the Change button under the Permitted To Use section.
  • In the Select User or Group window, type "Everyone" in the text box then click OK.
  • You are returned to the Copy To window. Click OK.
  • Click Yes to the confirmation to copy window.
  • After the profile is copied, you are returned to the User Profiles window. Just close all the windows.

Opening the Default user's ntuser.dat file:

  • Open RegEdit
  • Highlight the HKEY_USERS key
  • Select Load Hive from the Files menu
  • Select the C:\Users\Default\ntuser.dat file and click Open
  • You will be asked for a Key Name. I usually use DEFAULT_USER
  • Highlight the HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT_USER key and follow the directions in my previous post
  • After removing all the necessary entries, Highlight HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT_USER again
  • Select Unload Hive from the Files menu and click Yes to confirm
  • Close RegEdit and delete the ntuser.dat.log file from the C:\Users\Default folder
