Real applications of reasonable complexity

• use the variety of instructions seen in actual workloads
• let the compiler demonstrate its true optimization capability (or lack of)
• defeat "special" optimizations in the compiler or hardware for popular benchmarks

The SPEC benchmarks are excellent choices.
