Next-Generation Wireless Communications and Networks

Minglong Zhang | mz354@msstate.edu

Abstract: The next-generation wireless networks will be ubiquitous. They include cellular communications, Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and so on. With diverse applications, the next-generation wireless networks will provide Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC), Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC), and Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services, with improved security and higher intelligence. This lecture will introduce open radio access network (O-RAN). O-RAN provides the notion of openness, transparency, and flexibility for spurring innovation in the cellular communications. The goals of O-RAN are to facilitate vendor diversity and network intelligence through open interfaces, network softwarization and virtualization, and the integration of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML). A multipath communication approach will also be discussed, showing how it enhances the robustness when a wireless link is interrupted. The implementation of multipath communication using mobile phones and software-defined radio (SDR) will be presented. Finally, 6G vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications will be introduced. A fuzzy-aided reinforcement learning model will be adopted to intelligently allocate resources and satisfy the diverse application requirements of intelligent transportation systems.

Dr. Minglong Zhang is currently an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University. He received the M.S. degree from Peking University in 2011 and the Ph.D. degree from Auckland University of Technology in 2020. His research interests include 5G/6G communications, communication security, AI-enabled wireless communications and networking, O-RAN networks, and V2X communications.
