Title: Modeling and Control of Power Electronic Converters for Interfacing Modern Electrical Energy Systems and Devices

Abstract: The electric energy industry is going through a major paradigm shift where various distributed energy systems and devices are being increasingly interfaced with it using power electronic (PE) converters. Examples of such systems are solar photovoltaic (PV) generators, wind power generation, battery energy storage (BES) systems, electric vehicle (EV) technologies, and advanced motor drives. Power electronics
is the enabling technology where the fast-switching capability enables (1) conversion of one form of power to another (e.g., dc to ac), (2) adjustment of the amount of power flow, (3) enhancement of the quality of exchanged power, and (4) cooperative function of the energy system and device with the power grid. A modern electric energy system is a multi-faceted system where at least three major components are involved: the power grid, the energy resource, and the power electronic interface. For an effective and desirable operation of such system, the control system of PE interface plays the most important role in achieving the aforementioned four objectives. Towards this goal, a systematic modeling and control system design is required. This presentation provides a summary of a number of such research activities performed
at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the Mississippi State University (MSU). Particularly, topics including enhanced phase-locked loop (PLL) methods, interfacing distributed energy systems with the weak grid terminals, PV/BES synergy operations, impacts of EV adoption on distribution transformers, will be discussed.

Dr. Masoud Karimi-Ghartemani received his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) from the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 2004. From 2005 to 2008, he was a Faculty Member with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran. From 2008 to 2011, he was a member of the ePOWER Laboratory, Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada. Since 2012, he has been with the ECE Department of Mississippi State University (MSU), USA, where he is currently a professor. He is actively engaged in teaching multiple courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervising students in their research projects. His research interests include modeling and control of distributed and renewable energy systems. Results of his and his teams’ research works have been published in about ninety journal papers, seventy conference papers, and two books. Dr. Karimi is the recipient of the 2020 Faculty Research Award at MSU’s Bagley College of Engineering. He is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Industrial electronics, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, and IEEE PES Letters.
