ECE Graduate Student Wins APEC Award

April 21, 2022

Md Khurshedul Islam, a Ph.D. student in Mississippi State University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has received the best technical paper presentation award in the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) in 2022. APEC is the leading conference for power electronics professionals and one of the largest international conferences in the field. He also received the student research travel award from Mississippi State University’s Bagley College of Engineering to support this trip.

In Houston, Texas, for the conference, Islam presented a technical paper on “Comparison of Three-phase and Six-phase High-Power Ultra-High-Speed Machine for Portable Mechanical Antenna.” The paper presents that a multi-phase winding configuration enables effective power improvement of the ultra-high-speed machine.

Md Khurshedul Islam’s research interest is electric machine design and control. His current research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), focusing on the design of high-power ultra-high-speed machine (HP-UHSM). He developed a 6-phase 2-kW 0.5 million rpm permanent magnet machine, which is the highest power rated machine in the literature at this speed level. The machine will be used in the mechanical antenna for portable wireless communication in the RF-denied environment, such as in earth surface to underwater or underground facilities.

Islam thanks his co-author Kazi Nishat Tasnim. In addition, he notes his appreciation of Dr. Seungdeog Choi, an associate professor in ECE, who serves as his advisor.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University consists of 27 faculty members (including 6 endowed professors), 7 professional staff, and over 700 undergraduate and graduate students with approximately 100 being at the Ph.D. level. With research expenditure of the department in excess of $11.94 million, the department houses the largest High Voltage Laboratory among North American universities.
