Wearable Sensors for Ankle Movement and Gait Analysis

John Ball | jeball@ece.msstate.edu

Abstract: Low-cost wearable sensors now provide accurate and precise physical measurements compared to much more expensive motion capture (MOCAP) systems. This presentation will overview the development and testing of ankle wearable sensors for ankle motion and gait analysis. Specifically, regression and deep learning models are examined for estimation of ankle flexion and inversion and gait. A wearable solution allows the system to be used outside of the laboratory and at a much lower cost compared to MOCAP. This can enable analysis in sports (on the court/field), rehabilitation and prehabilitation, as well as health monitoring and tele-medicine.

Dr. Ball received his Ph.D. degree from Mississippi State University in 2007. He currently is an Associate Professor and the Guyton Teaching Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research spans sensor processing and analysis, including signal and image processing, deep learning, wearables, and autonomy. He has 16+ years’ experience in industry/government and 7+ years in academia.
